Symphony no.3, op. 55 "Eroica" - Symphony no. 1, op.21

Berliner Philharmoniker directed by Herbert von Karajan
Ludwig van BeethovenDeutsche Grammophon 2005

The Third Symphony, which contains a dramatic meditation on death, sets us before the evidence that time is precarious, the fact that man is earth, dust. (...) In a contradictory and deceitful way, man opposes nothingness to Being as if he were dealing with two realities. But man can have no reasons for not understanding that nothingness does not exist, since in nothingness nobody would be able to talk. (...) Death is a fantastic interrogative on life: how can life be eternal? We cannot imagine how life will be beyond death; all we know is that Being will not have us lose anything of what we have here.
